  • Author: Harper
  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Description

A theatrical, seasonal cocktail featuring deep red blood orange juice, tequila blanco, and a savory black salt rim. This drink is visually stunning and perfect for Halloween or autumn gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 34 large blood oranges (yielding approx. 1.5 cups / 350ml juice)
  • 2 cups / 480ml Tequila Blanco (100% agave)
  • 1/2 cup / 120ml Fresh Lime Juice (from 45 limes)
  • 1/4 cup / 60ml Orange Liqueur (Cointreau or Triple Sec)
  • 23 tablespoons / 30-45ml Agave Nectar (optional, to taste)
  • 1/2 cup / 120g Black Salt (Kala Namak) or coarse dark sea salt for rimming
  • 1/4 cup / 60g Coarse Sea Salt (alternative for rimming)
  • Ice (large cubes preferred)
  • Orange wheels for garnish
  • Edible flowers or herbs (rosemary/thyme) for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash blood oranges and limes thoroughly. Cut off ends, slice off peel and pith, and juice the fruit. Strain if desired. You should have about 1.5 cups orange juice and 1/2 cup lime juice.
  2. Pour black salt or coarse sea salt onto a small plate. Run a lime wedge around the rim of margarita or rocks glasses to wet them.
  3. Dip the wet rims into the salt, twisting gently to coat evenly. Tap off excess salt and place glasses in the fridge to chill.
  4. In a cocktail shaker, combine blood orange juice, fresh lime juice, tequila blanco, orange liqueur, and agave nectar (if using).
  5. Add a cup of ice to the shaker and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds until very cold.
  6. Strain the mixture into the chilled, salt-rimmed glasses filled with fresh ice.
  7. Garnish with a slice of blood orange and a sprig of rosemary or thyme. Serve immediately.

Notes

Use fresh juice only; bottled juice lacks flavor. Ensure glasses are cold to prevent dilution. Shake vigorously for 20 seconds. If blood oranges are unavailable, substitute with regular orange juice and a splash of cranberry or pomegranate juice for color. Do not freeze the finished drink.
